HEALTH TIPS FROM NURSE HOHNECKER

Parents/Guardians:

It is necessary to take precautions for you and your family to prevent the spread of the flu virus.

IMPORTANT:  If your child/children is/are sick, KEEP THEM HOME:

  • If your child is not feeling well in the morning, check his/her temperature before sending him/her to school.

  • If the temperature is 100 or above, the child should stay home and rest.

  • If vomiting or diarrhea is present during the night or in the morning, the student should stay home.

  • If the symptoms last longer than 24 hours, call your pediatrician.

  • Remember to dress appropriately for the cold weather: coats and hats, shoes, boots or sneakers with socks.

  • Eat a healthy diet, drink plenty of fluids, and get enough rest.

DO NOT SEND THEM TO SCHOOL until symptoms have been gone for 24 hours without the help of medication, or until the doctor sends a note stating the condition is not contagious and it is OK for your child to return to school.

Students are not allowed to carry any medication, prescription or over the counter, with the exception of Epi Pens and Inhalers. A doctor’s order must be provided giving them permission to carry the Epi Pen or Inhaler.

If your child may need prescription medication while at school, a doctor’s order is required. Medical forms can be picked up at school during school hours. The form(s) must be completed by the Health Care Provider and signed by a parent giving authorization for the medication. Medication cannot be given unless the proper forms are in place.

All prescription medication must be in an original, labeled and dated pharmacy container.  This includes Inhalers and Epi Pens. All medication must be brought to the school by a parent or guardian.

If your child is feeling ill during the school day they must be assessed by the nurse in order to be dismissed. Children are not to call or text parents that they are sick and need to go home.  Please make sure that the school has a working phone number at which someone can be reached in the event your sick child must be sent home.

*ALL STUDENTS ENTERING 6TH GRADE ARE REQUIRED TO RECEIVE A DOSE OF TDAP AND A DOSE OF MENINGOCOCCAL VACCINE.

*NEW/TRANSFERRING STUDENTS MUST RECEIVE A MEDICAL EXAMINATION UPON ENTRY INTO THE SCHOOL DISTRICT.

*PRIOR TO PARTICIPATION ON A SCHOOL-SPONSORED INTERSCHOLASTIC OR INTRAMURAL ATHLETIC TEAM, EACH STUDENT MUST PRESENT A COMPLETED PRE-PARTICIPATION PHYSICAL EVALUATION (PPE) FORM TO THE NURSE. PHYSICAL FORMS ARE AVAILABLE FOR PICK-UP AT THE SCHOOL.
